HANEY, George Bernard “Coach” Haney, age 81, of Stockbridge, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, September 30, 2017. He was born on February 7, 1936, to the late George and Nellie Haney in Atlanta, GA. He grew up in East Point, graduating from Russell High School in 1955. Mr. Haney was granted a football scholarship to Georgia Tech and played under Bobby Dodd one year before joining the U.S. Army in 1956. Upon leaving the military, George was granted a football scholarship to the University of Nebraska. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education in June of 1962. He was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 1962 but an injury ended his football career. Mr. Haney worked as assistant coach at Seward High School in Nebraska and at Hapeville High School in Georgia. He was head coach of wrestling and football from 1967-1978, being named Coach of the Year in 1970. While there he designed and built the first leg sled which was later retired to the strength museum at the University of Nebraska. After coaching, George became the Director of Maintenance, Renovation and Remodeling for the Fulton County School System until his retirement 32 years later. George was an active member of the Georgia Lion’s Club, being elected District Governor of 18-A in 1981-82. He also was a volunteer with Chick-fil-a Peach Bowl for over 30 years as a college football scout and member of the Selection Committee for bowl games. Mr. Haney was a longtime member of East Point Avenue Methodist Church where he was baptized on December 21, 1952. He was a current member and former elder of Community Bible Church in Stockbridge. George was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 52 years, Doris Haney; daughter, Valorie Nabers; and sister, Marilyn Haney. He is survived by his wife of 8 years, Peggy Glover Haney; son, Fred Haney (Gail); daughters, Linda Nabers, Cynthia Haney, and Christina Haney; grandchildren, Amanda Kemmerlin (Ryan), Daniel Nabers (Simone), Zachary Robinson (Stephanie), Matthew Nabers, Jacob Robinson, Kyle Haney, Erica Haney, Jeffrey Nabers and John Nabers; brother, Ronald Haney; and 4 great-grandchildren. A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 7, 2017, at The Chapel of Cannon Cleveland Funeral Directors with Rev. Steve Shivers officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Saturday, October 7, 2017 from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM at the funeral home.
