For those of you who may not know, a wildfire continues to burn in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, destroying hundreds of homes and businesses and forcing the evacuation of thousands of residents. Gatlinburg is a resort town – mostly seasonal. Although they do a large part of their business during warmer months, Christmas is a very big time for them as a tourist town. Gatlinburg is a gateway to the Smokey Mountains and Pigeon Forge.
About 100 homes have been damaged or destroyed by flames from spreading wildfires, state emergency officials said. Over 250 structured have been scorched and more than 14,000 people were evacuated from Gatlinburg alone, with thousands of them seeking refuge in emergency shelters. There have been 3 confirmed deaths attributed to these wildfires and they happened quickly when winds fanned out over night without warning. And it’s not over yet. Winds may gust up to 90 MPH tonight as storms move into the area, hopefully bringing rain to cool things off and drench the fire.
Lions Clubs International Foundation has made a $10,000 emergency grant today. Also, TN District 12N is fundraising for this emergency relief effort.
