November is Diabetes Awareness Month. November 14th is World Diabetes Day. When a disease or illness has its own month or its own day – Worldwide, it’s a global issue.
Did you know that Diabetes is now the 6th leading cause of death worldwide? Or that it is the 6th leading cause of death in women? 50% of those who have Diabetes are not even aware of it. Yet 1 person dies from Diabetes every 7 seconds. Think about that. Let it sink in. Seven. Seconds. That’s 5 million people each year. Wow! Staggering, isn’t it?
Ways to Help
Now that we all understand just how big of a problem it is, let’s look at some ways we can help reduce those numbers, shall we? LCI has put together some ways to make it easy to get the word out in our communities. Here are some helpful things you can do this month to recognize World Diabetes and its detrimental impact on the health of our world.
Order Diabetes Bookmarks – They are $2.95 for 25. Order Diabetes Bookmarks
Volunteer for a day at a diabetes camp. Visit www.diabetescamps.org to find a camp near you.
Organize a Strides Walk. Use your poster (contact Michele for more information) to make gathering this information easier and more productive.
Hold your next meeting outdoors (weather permitting) where you can go for a short hike together. It doesn’t have to be long or treacherous. Just a small walk in nature makes all the difference.
If you have ideas that your club will use this month, send them to us! We want to share them with others! Be sure to send your newsletter articles to Joy at Joy’s Email
